Vinyl vs. Polyester vs. BOPP: Which Sticker or Label Material Do You Need?

The right material depends on where your sticker or label will live. Choose vinyl for branded stickers and general outdoor use, polyester for equipment and high heat, and BOPP for product labels used mostly indoors.

When Should You Choose Vinyl Stickers?

Choose vinyl when you need a versatile sticker that looks great and holds up outdoors. It’s the go-to material for logo stickers, giveaways, event stickers, and branded merchandise.

Our standard white vinyl stickers are 8 mils thick with a matte or gloss laminate. They use a semi-permanent adhesive that sticks well to most smooth surfaces and removes cleanly from many of them. Expect 3 to 5 years of outdoor life.

Vinyl is also flexible, so it handles curves better than a stiffer film. For hard hats and other rounded surfaces, our hard hat stickers use a conformable vinyl made to wrap without wrinkling.

If you need a tougher vinyl for rough handling or textured surfaces, step up to heavy duty stickers. They use a 12 mil vinyl with an ultra-aggressive adhesive, for 14 mils total.

When Should You Choose Polyester Stickers?

Choose polyester when a sticker needs to stay on a piece of equipment for years, especially around heat. It’s the better fit for equipment decals, asset labels, and HVAC service stickers.

Our industrial stickers pair a 2 mil white polyester with a 2 mil gloss polyester laminate and a permanent adhesive. They’re rated for 4 to 5 years outdoors and -40°F to 302°F.

Permanent means permanent. Polyester stickers are hard to remove and will likely leave residue, so they aren’t the right choice for anything you plan to take off later.

Polyester also comes in premium finishes. Our brushed aluminum stickers are made from a polyester material with a metallic surface, so you get the look of metal without using a metal plate.

When Should You Choose BOPP Labels?

Choose BOPP for product labels on bottles, jars, cans, boxes, and pouches. It’s built for packaging, not for life outdoors.

BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene. Our standard custom product labels use a 2 mil white BOPP with a 1 mil gloss laminate, and matte is available on request. The material is waterproof and is supplied on rolls, which makes it easier to apply labels quickly and consistently.

BOPP is not a great outdoor solution. If your label will spend its life in the sun, use vinyl or polyester instead.

For a label that seems to disappear on glass or clear packaging, our clear no-look labels are printed on clear BOPP.

Does a Thicker Sticker Last Longer?

Not always. Thickness helps a sticker resist tearing and rough handling, but it doesn’t tell you how long a sticker will last outdoors.

Our industrial polyester is 5 mils thick and our white vinyl is 8 mils. Even so, the polyester has the longer outdoor rating. Material, ink, laminate, and adhesive all affect how long a sticker lasts.

What’s the Difference Between Cast and Calendered Vinyl?

Calendered vinyl is the standard choice for most stickers, while cast vinyl is the specialty option. Calendered film is rolled and stretched into shape. Cast film is poured into a thin layer, which generally makes it more conformable.

Our standard vinyl stickers are calendered. If your project calls for cast vinyl, it’s available through our cgpro program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is polyester better than vinyl for stickers?

Polyester is better for equipment and high heat. Vinyl is usually the better fit for branded stickers, giveaways, and curved surfaces because it’s more flexible and easier to remove.

Can BOPP labels be used outdoors?

BOPP is waterproof, but it isn’t a great choice for long-term outdoor use. Use vinyl or polyester for anything that will stay outside.

Is BOPP the same as vinyl?

No. BOPP is a polypropylene film used mostly for product labels. Vinyl is a more flexible material used for stickers and outdoor graphics.

What is the best sticker material for outdoor use?

Polyester has our longest outdoor rating of the three at 4 to 5 years. White vinyl is rated for 3 to 5 years and is often the better fit for branded stickers.

What temperature can polyester stickers handle?

Our polyester is rated from -40°F to 302°F. That makes it our top choice of the three for equipment that runs hot.

Do stickers need to be applied at a certain temperature?

Yes. For best results, apply stickers and labels to a clean, dry surface at 50°F or warmer. Cold surfaces can keep the adhesive from bonding fully.
